Whether you are a knitting enthusiast, a fashion lover, or simply someone looking for natural and sustainable products, wool has something to offer for everyone.

FABRIC FOCUS

MANUFACTURING

#1
SHEARING

The first stage in wool production involves shearing the animals to recover their fleece. The quality of the wool depends largely on the breed of animal and the way it is cared for.

#2
SORTING

Once the wool has been harvested, it is sorted to remove impurities, unwanted hairs and pieces of vegetation.

#3
WASHING

The wool is then washed to remove dirt, grease and other contaminants. This process can be carried out with hot or cold water, depending on the intended use of the wool.

#4
CARDING

The washed wool is carded to align the fibres and make them ready for spinning. This process produces a softer, more uniform wool.

#5
SPINNING

The carded fibres are spun into wool yarn. These can be used as they are or dyed to create a variety of colours.

#6
WEAVING OR KNITTING

The wool yarns are then used to create fabrics, clothes, blankets and many other products.

CARE

To ensure your wool jumpers last, wash them with a gentle detergent specifically designed for wool. Wash by hand or use the cold wool cycle on the washing machine at under 800 RPM to stop the fabric lustering. Don't iron wool (also to stop it lustering).
